DARREN Currie has returned to Ipswich Town after his loan spell with Coventry City determined to force his way back into the side.

Ipswich want a fee for Currie, believed to be around £50,000, but Sky Blues boss Micky Adams expected to take the unwanted Town midfielder. who is out of contract in the summer, on a free transfer.

So now Currie's successful loan stint at the Ricoh Arena has ended and he will join up with the Ipswich squad when they return from a two-day break today.

Although the 32-year-old enjoyed his stay at Coventry, and would be happy to sign for the Sky Blues, he has no intention of moping around at Portman Road.

He is even prepared to become cup-tied by playing against Chester City in the FA Cup on Saturday while Coventry are away at Bristol City.

Currie said: “I want to play regular football and I did that at Coventry. It seemed to go well for me, enough for them to want to sign me, and hopefully something might still happen.

“But I'm back with the boys today and will be working as hard as always to get a place in the team - starting with Saturday.

“I have not come back just to sit on my backside and pick up wages - I want to play and do my best for the club.”

Currie played eight games for City, helping them to two wins and three draws.

He was not allowed to play for City against Ipswich in their 2-1 defeat on Boxing Day as part of the loan arrangement and three losses over the festive period have put pressure on manager Adams.

He is still keen to secure Currie for this season and beyond, and the former Brighton winger has been well received by Sky Blues fans.

A £250,000 signing from Brighton in December 2004, Currie was last year the Powergen/EADT player of the year after playing in all but one Town game that season.
