The ‘Standing Together’ against domestic abuse campaign from Essex County Council and Essex Police has gone international in its first five days.

More than four million people have been made aware of the campaign via twitter, facebook and other online and social media channels.

Views of the domestic abuse pages on the Essex Police website have increased by 710% in just four-and-a-half days and the ‘Standing together’ web film has had almost 1,500 views.

People far and wide have been supporting the campaign by tweeting their feet and uploading onto twitter or facebook using the hashtags #notodomesticabuse and #tweetyourfeet to stand together and show their support.

The campaign has also involved online advertising, media coverage, posters and leaflets around the county and targeted advertising in changing rooms and washrooms.

Essex MPs, the PCC, MEPs, cabinet members, ministers at the Welsh Assembly Government, businesses, partner agencies, other councils, members of the community and even pets have all showed their support by getting involved and tweeting their feet, or paws.

The campaign also had local celebrity Rachel Riley from Countdown showing her support and tweeting her feet.

Councillor Dick Madden, cabinet member for children and families at Essex County Council, said: “We’ve had an amazing response to this campaign so far.

“Our main goal all along was to raise awareness and I think the figures speak for themselves.

“Thank you to everyone who has got involved and helped spread the word about the campaign. I hope that by doing so we have helped people who may be in an abusive relationship and pointed them in the right direction for support and help.

“It’s fantastic to see that people now know about the campaign not only in Essex but all over the UK, Brussels, Wales and even as far afield as the USA, Africa and Australia.

“If you haven’t done so yet, please #tweetyourfeet and stand with us to say #notodomesticabuse.”

Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh said: “ We have been overwhelmed by the support from our partners, the local community and people all around the world, who have been standing with us to raise awareness of this very important issue. Working with survivors has been integral to the development of this campaign, we are committed to listening to survivors, to continually improve our service to them. As part of the campaign we have updated our website with even more information about domestic abuse and the support and services available from both the police and other agencies that we work with, so please take a look.”
