INSPIRATIONAL skipper Matt Edison has no intention of taking his foot off the gas, even though his Bury St Edmunds side wrapped up promotion in style with a 73-0 win over Chingford at The Haberden on a snowy Saturday.

Giant No.8 Edison, a rock in the Bury pack, wants to maintain the west Suffolk club’s perfect record throughout the season, which means winning their last three games to make it 26 wins from 26 starts.

“There’s three games to go and we don’t want to let up until the end,” insisted a jubilant Edison.

“Each game is our cup final until the finish.

“It’s been a really long season, starting from June last year. We set our goals from the beginning – we wanted to get promotion, and we wanted to remain undefeated.

“And luckily today in the snow we managed to finish it off.

“We wanted to be the best team in the league, not just on but off the pitch as well. That meant extra work outside normal training, doing our fitness and our weights from Monday to Friday.

“As a consequence, the second halves of most games have been where we have shone.

“Every game has been a learning curve for us. We have been professional even in the easier games,” added Edison.

Already assured of promotion to the national league, Bury need to beat Beaconsfield and Rochford Hundred away, and Luton at home, in their final three fixtures to protect their fantastic 100 per cent record.

And the supporters who braved the arctic conditions, to watch Saturday’s conclusive 73-0 win over Chingford, were treated to a glimpse of Bury’s free-flowing style of rugby which they intend to pursue next season.

Edison continued: “We wanted to play the style of rugby which we want to take into next season, despite the conditions, which is a running game and a pass-game, rather than just kicking it.

“We have started to put into place stuff for next season already, and that’s how we want to play.

“We want to practise now for what we want to take into next season, which we know is going to be a very tough campaign.

“Obviously, our goals for next season aren’t going to be the same as this year.

“We will be looking to stay up in the league and hopefully finish in a mid-table position, although that’s going to take as much, if not more, hard work than we have put in this year.

“We don’t necessarily need a change in tactics, but just keep the same attitude as this year,” concluded Edison.
