It’s still very early days, but George Moncur already looks as though he could be the find of the season for Colchester United.

Moncur, snapped up on loan from West Ham over the summer, marked his first two league appearances for the U’s with goals against Oldham and at Bristol City.

And the 21-year-old followed these up with a man-of-the-match display in Tuesday night’s frustrating 2-1 defeat at Notts County.

Mid-January, when Moncur’s current loan spell expires, is still a long way off, but the midfielder is already suggesting he could be with the U’s for the whole season.

“If I can keep the form that I am currently showing, then things might happen after January,” revealed Moncur, following yesterday’s training session at Florence Park, Tiptree.

“I’m more than happy to stay here for the season, if they (Colchester)want me. Hopefully, we can get a few results between now and then. If I’m needed, I definitely would mind the deal being extended.

“Things are going really well for me at the minute. Obviously it’s quite hard with the games not going our way at the moment, but hopefully we can pick up form in the next couple of games.

“The performances have been good, from me and the team, and the points are all that is missing,” added Moncur.

The U’s have so far only collected one point from their first three games, in addition to bowing out of the Capital One Cup at Charlton.

Moncur, though, has struck up a good understanding with Alex Gilbey in the centre of the park, as well as linking up well with former West Ham team-mate Freddie Sears, who scored his first goal of the season at Notts County.

“I had a word with Freddie (Sears) and Dom (Vose) before I came down to train over the summer, with them both having come from West Ham,” continued Moncur.

“Freddie was playing in the first team (at West Ham), but if he didn’t play at the weekend, then he would drop down and play in our games.

“So I was always training with him. I’ve played with him for ages.”

Moncur’s previous loan switch, to Scottish Premier club Partick Thistle, did not go according to plan at the back end of last season. He move up to Scotland at the end of January, but only made a couple of appearances for Thistle.

But it’s a completely different story at Colchester.

“This is the move that is working out quite well for me at the minute,” confirmed Moncur.

“I went to Wimbledon when I was 18, and played about 20 games, but when I went up to Scotland that was a lot harder.

“I wasn’t really playing. I was injured for a while before I went up there, so I wasn’t really fit or on form.

“It was also hard being away from your family and friends.

“But coming to Colchester, they’ve shown faith in me. I’m sure this move will be better for me, in the long run.

“I love to get the ball down and play, out from the back, so the style suits me. That’s how I want to play throughout my career,” added Moncur who, like his Dad John Moncur, a former Tottenham and West Ham midfielder, is a devout Christian.

Moncur is set to make his fifth senior appearance for the U’s against visiting Doncaster tomorrow.
