George Moncur, who was left out of Colchester United’s squad in mysterious circumstances on Tuesday night, will return for the trip to Fleetwood Town this weekend.

U’s manager Tony Humes did not reveal the reasons for Moncur’s absence in midweek, for the goal-less home draw with Oldham, merely stating that the ex-West Ham midfielder was “unavailable.”

This open-ended explanation had U’s supporters conjuring up their own reasons for Moncur’s absence – there was talk of transfer speculation, while the player himself had been clearly disappointed to be substituted during last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Peterborough.

But whatever the reason, Moncur will travel with the U’s squad today, and is set to be in the 18-man squad to face the Cod Army at Highbury Stadium.

“George (Moncur) will be involved this weekend,” insisted Humes, after yesterday’s training session.

“George is back in today. He has trained today (yesterday), and will be travelling up to Fleetwood. He’s back in the squad.

“He was unavailable for Tuesday night, and the main thing is that he is now back in, involved with what we are doing.

“From our perspective on Tuesday, there were no issues and no concerns, it was just as it was. He was unavailable,” added Humes.

Meanwhile, Humes revealed that target man Chris Porter will miss the game at Fleetwood, due to his ongoing ankle injury.

Club captain Porter suffered the injury during the opening day 2-2 draw against Blackpool, and has sat out the subsequent league games at Peterborough and against Oldham, and the League Cup defeat to Reading.

Macauley Bonne will therefore continue to lead the U’s front-line, against a Fleetwood side who claimed an impressive 4-3 win at neighbours Bury on Tuesday night.

Matt Briggs missed the Oldham visit, after taking a knock in a rash challenge by Posh striker Joe Gormley at London Road last weekend.

But Briggs was back in training yesterday, and so will be pushing for a return to the left-back role, although his young deputy, Kane Vincent-Young, delivered a fine display against Oldham. Manager Humes therefore faces a tricky decision.
