In an entertaining first half, defences were on top and the closest either side came to scoring was when Charlton struck a post in the 41st minute.
The game became increasingly scrappy and was littered with fouls after the interval and neither side could make the breakthrough.
Andrew Plummer made some important saves for Town while Jack Ainsley worked tirelessly in defence and attack, but at the final whistle it was probably Ipswich who were happier with a point.
Ipswich Town: Plummer, Clemo, Robinson, Williams, Watson, Hyam, Upson, Daniels, Ainsley, Rhodes and Tooms. Subs. Calver, Ward, Clark, Griffiths and Roe.
