Grundisburgh manager Micky Squirrell will have no qualms should his team miss out on the Senior Division title this season.

Second-top Grundisburgh travel to relegation-threatened Westerfield United tomorrow and will have a keen eye on the top versus third game between leaders Achilles and hosts Ipswich Valley Rangers.

Squirrell’s side won 1-0 at Capel Plough in midweek but, having slipped up at home to Haughley United, 4-2, on Saturday, their chances took a knock.

“We still have a chance, after winning away in midweek, but know we go to a team that are fighting relegation after their last result,” said Squirrell.

“We have also got Coplestonians away who are fighting for their lives and it’s not an easy run-in.

“It’s out of our hands now but there are so many twists and turns at the end of the season, and the pitches are usually rock-hard and not conducive to good football, so anything can happen.”

Grundisburgh’s defeat last Saturday was only their second in 19 games, while Achilles can boast a recent record of six wins from their previous seven games.

“Apart from last week we have only lost one in our last 18 or 19 games, while Achilles are on quite a good run of form too,” said Squirrell.

“If we are second after 30 games and not top, the league table doesn’t lie and it will prove that we have not been quite good enough and Achilles will have deserved it.”

Should Grundisburgh miss out on the league’s bragging rights, they will still have the consolation of a game in the final of the Bob Coleman Cup, against East Bergholt, at Woodbridge Town’s ground on May 9.

“Our season does not end when the league campaign finishes and while we were disappointed to go out of the Senior Cup, this is a nice way to cushion the blow,” he added.

Squirrell also had his say on the venue change for the Senior Cup final, the game between Whitton United and Ipswich Wanderers now being played at Hadleigh United on May 5.

That is because of Ipswich Town’s potential involvement in the play-offs and the Barry Manilow concert on May 16.

“I’ve been involved in local football many years and the one final that was always held at Portman Road was the Senior Cup final,” said Squirrell.

“Ipswich are assuming they are going to make the play-offs and I’m sure a date could have been fixed after the season was over.”
