Needham Market manager Mark Morsley says his side could lose 8-0 at home to big-spending Billericay Town this afternoon, such will be the Marketmen’s gung-ho attitude to the game.

Needham are three points adrift of Wingate & Finchley, who currently occupy the final play-off spot in the Ryman Premier, ahead of the league’s final round of regular-season games.

A win for Morsley’s side and defeat for Wingate at home to Dulwich Hamlet would put the sides level on points.

However, the Marketmen’s goal difference is far inferior and they would need to overturn an eight-goal swing to make the play-offs, and therefore will be looking for plenty of goals against a team including ex-Premier League stars, Paul Konchesky and Jamie O’Hara.

“We’re going to have a right go and see what happens,” said Morsley.

“We could lose 8-0, but who gives a damn?

“It’s not going to be a cagey game, we need an eight-goal swing and I will certainly be playing more strikers than defenders.”

While sealing a play-off place looks unlikely, Morsley and his players can draw upon the experiences of recent season and the club are promoting the hashtag #spiritofchatham online, which refers to Needham’s two dramatic final-game victories against Chatham in recent years.

Needham won 5-0 at Chatham two years ago to clinch the Ryman North title, having defeated the same team 7-1 at home, the previous year to overturn a negative goal difference and reach the Ryman North play-offs.

“It’s the fourth season in a row that the final game has thrown up something quite interesting and we are looking forward to playing an almost-professional team,” Morsley added.

“It’s a David versus Goliath game and we are David by a country-mile, given their (Billericay) plans for the club.”

Morsley, who takes charge of his final league game as Needham manager, before moving into a Director of Football role, added: “The play-offs are unlikely but not beyond the realms of possibility as we have goals in us, while Wingate are not great defensively.

“Dulwich Hamlet have the ability to put four or five past Wingate if they play the way they can.”
