COLCHESTER United have recalled Simon Hackney from his loan spell at Morecambe.

With Anthony Wordsworth suspended for Saturday’s trip to Hartlepool and John-Joe O’Toole now facing a lengthy spell out injured, U’s boss Aidy Boothroyd has been forced to bring Hackney back in from the cold.

The 26-year-old left-winger hasn’t featured for the U’s since playing in the 7-0 FA Cup third round thrashing by Preston at the start of the year.

He was loaned to League Two side Morecambe at the start of March and, after quickly settling in, his one month temporary switch was extended until the end of the season.

Hackney has made eight appearances for the Shrimps – scoring one goal – as the Lancashire side reignited their previously fading play-off hopes.

His recall appears to be with Colchester’s trip to Hartlepool specifically in mind, however Hackney will then be unable to return to Christie Park to aid their promotion push.

“Boothroyd was complimentary about the way Morecambe had conducted things and also the way the club had looked after his player,” read a statement on the official Morecambe website.

“He said he would have no hesitation about helping us out in the future if he could.”
