He was part of a 30-strong KUGB England squad.

The Ipswich karateka took part in the senior events on day three of the event and, after qualifying for the semi-finals, secured a place in the finals of the Senior Men’s Individual Kata, where he won bronze, to add to his previous 15 international medals.

This year has been a successful one for Somers. He won the British National Senior Individual Kata Men’s event for the second year running and the National Senior Shotokan Cup for the third year running.

KUGB England finished top of the overall medals’ table with six Gold, five Silver and seven Bronze.

There were more than 750 competitors taking part from 27 countries, some travelling from as far as America, Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Ghana.

Somers training is full steam ahead as KUGB England will be taking part in the ESKA European Karate Championships in Portugal at the end of next month.

Back home, he is doing his Sports Ambassador work as part of Suffolk Sport and also takes an active role as a Mental Health Ambassador for the KUGB.

Somers works as a gym instructor and also teaches at his local club, Ipswich Higashi SKC.
