CRYSTAL Palace boss Dougie Freedman has spoken of his delight at landing former Ipswich Town defender Damien Delaney on a free.

Blues boss Paul Jewell allowed the experienced centre-back to leave on Thursday – with Delaney joining Town’s divisional rivals on a short-term deal just 24 hours later.

Now as Jewell steps up his search for new defenders, Freedman has been left delighted with the late swoop of the Republic of Ireland international and Blackburn Rovers striker David Goodwillie on loan.

Freedman admitted: “I’ve been after Damien for the last two years. We’ve got to look at a short-term deal because we’ve got to look to balance the books.

“You’ve seen on Saturday that with that bit of loving they could turn out to be good players for us.”
