Ipswich Town fan and new British Masters Bronze champion Billy Bird has revealed he would love to fight at his beloved Portman Road after taking another step up the boxing ladder on Friday.

The 21-year-old was in control throughout his victory against Leicester’s Simon Henry, the Sudbury man eventually stopping his opponent in the fifth round to lift the light-middleweight title.

Unbeaten in 10 professional fights, Bird is keen to get back in the ring, and admitted that a date on the hallowed turf at Ipswich would be a dream come true.

“That would be an honour and I am sure something could happen in the future,” said Bird.

“If I was offered the chance, I would not turn it down and I would love nothing more than to walk out at Portman Road with the British Masters belt.

“But what happens in the future, I will leave down to my management team.”

Bird was backed a loyal army of 110 fans at Norwich’s St Andrew’s Hall and became the first boxer to stop 31-year-old Henry.

“I have showed all the local people who I am and what I want to achieve and I thank my supporters that came and gave me great support, they were noisy from the off,” he added.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling, the best I have had in my career without a doubt and I don’t think I have stopped smiling or let go of the belt since the end of the fight.

“It was a brilliant fight and everything went to plan.

“The aim was to hit him hard and early from the off with my jab but he approached the fight really well and I thought he was going to be in for the duration.

“I was being told to land my jab every time and although it didn’t work straight away, I knew I was catching him with straight shots. I kept him long and was coming in with my right hand.

“The last 10 seconds of every round I was building up a head of steam, I was finishing strong, and that is testament to the work I have been doing in the gym with my team.”
