It was a mixed transfer deadline day for Ipswich Town, with manager Mick McCarthy completing a late loan deal for Everton full-back Callum Connolly but seeing a deal for Brighton centre-back Connor Goldson fall through.
Connolly, 19, was on loan at Wigan last season and part of the England Under-20 side which won the World Cup this summer. Ex-Blues boss Joe Royle, who is head of youth development at the Toffees, says the teenager can play in a number of roles.
Goldson completed a medical at Portman Road yesterday morning, but Brighton pulled the plug after one of their own incoming transfers fell through.
Town are still without a fit senior centre-back though with Luke Chambers, Adam Webster and Tommy Smith all sidelined.
Jonas Knudsen and Jordan Spence have deputised at the heart of the back four in the last two games – a 2-0 home win over Brentford and 2-0 home loss to Fulham – with Dominic Iorfa and Myles Kenlock the full-backs.
Academy graduate Luke Woolfenden, who impressed in the recent Carabao Cup defeat at Premier League side Crystal Palace, has acted as the defensive back-up on the bench.
Following this weekend’s international break, Town return to action at QPR on Saturday, September 9.
