Ipswich Town defender Tommy Smith got on the scoresheet for New Zealand last night.

Smith thundered home a header as the ‘All Whites’ beat Irish Division Two side Cabinteely FC 5-2 at Stradbrook in Dublin in front of around 1,000 fans.

The win was part of New Zealand’s build-up to the FIFA Confederations Cup, which starts on June 17.

Smith opened the scoring from a Marco Rojas corner, and later tweeted it was his first goal since September 2015.

The 27-year-old has made 31 appearances for New Zealand, scoring two goals. He represented the country at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, playing every minute of every game.

He became the youngest captain in New Zealand history on May 23, 2012.

Smith qualifies to play for the All Whites as, although he was born in England and represented them at under 17 and under 18 level, he spent much of his childhood in New Zealand.
