In this week’s Ipswich Town nostalgia, we look back to September 1984, when goals from Russell Osman, Alan Sunderland, Eric Gates and two Villa red cards helped the Blues to a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Portman Road.
The Blues, who started the 1984/85 campaign with just one win in their first seven league games, gained their second three points of the season with a comfortable win against Villa who had won three of their seven league games.
The highlight of this fixture was when Villa had two of their players sent off – defender Peter Withe and forward Colin Gibson both dismissed in the 53rd minute – the Blues going on to win 3-0.
Town goalscorers on the day were Russell Osman, Alan Sunderland and Eric Gates. Ipswich haven’t scored more than one goal against Villa in League football since this win in 1984.
Town XI: Cooper, Burley, Butcher, Zondervan, Osman, Cranson, Putney, McCall, Sunderland, O’Callaghan, Gates. Attandance: 15,630
