TOWN boss Jim Magilton has welcomed the loan signing of Sheffield United hitman Jon Stead, who is due in Ipswich today for a medical to complete the deal.

The 25-year-old is on loan until January with the two sides thought to have agreed on a fee of £1.25m if the deal is made permanent after that time.

“Jon brings something different to add to our squad,” said Magilton.

“He will add competition for places up front and brings with him experience of having played in the Premier League and scoring in the Premier League.”

Stead, who stands six foot three inches, is set to play a little and large show with fellow striker Kevin Lisbie.

Blades boss Kevin Blackwell said: “It's an opportunity for Jon to play - naturally he wants to start games and I cannot guarantee that here at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Luton Town manager Mick Hartford made an 11th hour attempt to take a Town player on loan last night.

The player was believed to be young striker Jordan Rhodes after he netted twice in yesterday's Combination Cup game at Watford.
