Mick McCarthy delighted to sign strike duo David McGoldrick and Aaron McLean
IPSWICH Town manager Mick McCarthy says he is delighted to have added strike duo David McGoldrick and Aaron McLean to his squad on loan.
The pair have today completed season-long loan switches from Championship clubs Nottingham Forest and Hull respectively, with McGoldrick’s move with view to a permanent switch in the summer.
McGoldrick struggled to find the net regularly at the City ground following a 1m switch from Southampton, but netted 17 goals in 22 league games on loan at League One side Coventry City in the first half of the campaign.
McLean has slipped down the pecking order at the second-placed Tigers. The former non-league front man – who joined Hull for 1.3m from Peterborough – has only netted nine times in 76 appearances at his current employers, but his work-rate and high pressing will fit in well with McCarthy’s style of play and provide an alternative option to Michael Chopra, Daryl Murphy and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.
“David (McGoldrick) has dropped down a level to play for Coventry on loan over the first half of the season and did really well,” said McCarthy, speaking to the official club website.
“He was the leading scorer in League One with 16 goals so we are signing a player on top of his form.
“He’s a good player who we have been watching and it’s a deal that we are looking to lead to a permanent one.”

He added: “Aaron is also a good addition to the squad. I tried to sign him for Wolves a long time ago so I know about his qualities.
“He will bring pace, power and athleticism to the side and I’m delighted that we have managed to get hold of them both.”
McGoldrick – who trained with his new team mates for the first time this morning – said: “It feels great to be an Ipswich Town player and everyone knows it’s a big club.
“The chance to come and play for a club of Ipswich’s size – and under a manager like Mick McCarthy – was something that I just couldn’t turn down. I’m delighted to be here.
“I’m glad that the deal is finally done and I’m looking forward to getting to know the lads and getting my Ipswich career started.”
He added: “I’d known about Mick’s interest for a while, but then I went back to Forest from my loan spell at Coventry and I thought I would be staying there.
“Then I got a call to come down to Ipswich and the next day I had signed, passed my medical and was training with the boys. It’s been a crazy 24 hours but I’m just happy that it’s all done now.”
McGoldrick has been handed the No.16 shirt and McLean No.25. Ipswich completed the moves close to today’s 12pm deadline and are now waiting to see if the pair were registered in time to play in tomorrow’s FA Cup third round match at Aston Villa.
