Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy said he was delighted with the Blues’ first half display in the 2-0 victory against Rotherham United on Saturday.

The Blues moved up to fourth in the Championship, following their fourth win in a row, thanks to two goals in the first six minutes from Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick.

They could have put the game out of sight on 46 minutes when Conor Sammon hit the post, while Luke Chambers and Christophe Berra saw their first half headers saved by former Town keeper Scott Loach.

For large parts of the second half, Rotherham put Ipswich on the back foot but only really tested Dean Gerken on one occasion, Paul Green’s free-kick being scrambled away by the keeper, who then saw Frazer Richardson clear the bar when the ball rebounded out to him.

“We made a great start. Whatever happened after that, I have no idea,” said McCarthy.

“Two goals up, the opposition has to take chances and push players forward and I will analyse the game at seven in the morning, but we won the game which is the most important thing.

“I think they (Murphy and McGoldrick) are a good partnership, I am not going to rate them as to where they are (as a partnership) and we will see at the end of the season how many goals the pair of them have. They are playing well.”

He added: “I thought Rotherham were excellent, they kept going, I knew they would, and I have said all week that I thought this would be our hardest game and it’s turned out to be that way.

“I don’t think there is too many frontmen caused our back four problems like that in the air, but they did, and I thought they played well, but they conceded two goals to us and that’s the name of the game.”
