IPSWICH TOWN are in good hands, according to out-going chief executive Simon Clegg.

Clegg stood down as chief executive at Portman Road, after almost four years yesterday, and admitted to shortcomings during his time in the role.

However, he believes he has orchestrated many successes at Portman Road and is leaving the club in a solid position, led by owner Marcus Evans, who will assume a more hands-on role.

“I have tried to achieve success on the pitch by supporting the managers at the club the best I have been able to and that has not been successful,” said Clegg, whose roles and responsibilities will be assumed by joint managing directors, Ian Milne and Jonathan Symonds, with fellow board member Martin Pitcher working in a support role.

“Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, everything is judged on what happens on the pitch.

“There have been some successes, but not as many as I would have liked, and disappointments.

“But I genuinely believe with Mick McCarthy in charge, Marcus Evans playing a much more hands-on role and Bryan Klug in charge of the academy, the club is in a good position.”

He added: “There are a lot of things off the pitch that have been achieved that I am incredibly proud of.

“There has been the naming of the Sir Bobby Robson and the Sir Alf Ramsey Stands, both recognising the club’s history, and we have tried to do things the Ipswich Town way.

“I have always wanted to prioritise the protection of the season ticket holder. I have introduced online tickets and season tickets by direct debit, payable over 12 months.

“There are a number of things I would like to think I have made a contribution to.

“There are sound systems and structures in place that were not there before.”
