FORMER Ipswich Town captain Mick Mills has represented the club at the funeral of former coach Gary Ablett.

Ablett, the former Liverpool and Everton defender who was a coach at Town for a short time under Roy Keane, passed away on New Year’s Day at the age of 46 following a long battle against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Ablett was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer just three weeks after joining the Town coaching staff in the summer of 2010.

The club honoured his contract and continued to support him as his illness took its toll on his health.

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “I am very grateful to Mick for accepting my invitation to represent the club today. This is an incredibly sad time for all of Gary’s family and friends and our thoughts are with Jacqueline and the children especially on this very difficult day.”
