Former Ipswich Town boss George Burley has drawn comparisons between Tyrone Mings and a former Blues left-back, known for his marauding runs up and down the wing.

The ex-Blues boss signed Icelandic defender Hermann Hreidarsson for what remains Town’s second-biggest outlay on a player – £4.5m – and watched the former Crystal Palace player become a fans’ favourite as Ipswich qualified for the UEFA Cup in his first season at the club.

Fourteen years on, and emerging star Mings is quickly becoming a household name at Portman Road, having taken on the tough task of replacing star left-back, Aaron Cresswell, who moved to West Ham, in pre-season.

“I like my full-backs to get forward, as that can start an attack and Mings did that when I watched him against Brighton, at Portman Road recently,” said Burley.

“They have also got to defend properly too and he has been outstanding. He reminds me of Hermann Hreidarsson.

“Hermann had that great big heart, was very aggressive and, because of his athleticism, could get up and down the field quickly and the boy Mings does the same.

“He (Mings) is a tall guy but he has adapted to the left-back role and his athleticism is there for all to see. He can turn defence into attack in three or four strides.”
