Essex side Stanway Rovers have appointed former Colchester United midfielder Kemi Izzet as player-boss.
The 36-year-old – who made more than 400 appearances for the U’s between 2001 to 2013 – has spent the last three years playing for Suffolk side Needham Market, captaining them to the Ryman League North Division title then helping establish them as a competitive Step Three outfit.
Izzet has made no secret of the fact he wants to get into management and made public his application for the vacant Colchester United job back in April last year. He revealed following Monday night’s Suffolk Premier Cup triumph over Lowestoft that an announcement was imminent.
Stanway recently finished sixth in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division (Step Five) table under the management of another former U’s legend, Karl Duguid. The latter will move aside to become Izzet’s assistant in a new management structure, with Michael Pulford taking on the role of Director of Football at the Hawthorns.
