Kevin Bru believes he still had a lot to offer Ipswich Town and has thanked Blues fans for their support following a move to Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

The Paris-born midfielder spent four years at Portman Road, scoring four goals in 62 starts and 41 substitute appearances.

Signed by Mick McCarthy following an impressive trial in 2014, the Mauritian international played a key role as Town recorded Championship finishes of sixth and seventh.

His game-time tailed off after that though and he spent the entirety of last season on the transfer list, making just three league starts.

“I made many friends in Ipswich, it was an important time in my life and career and I will always look back on it with happy memories,” said the 29-year-old.

“I will always be thankful to Mick McCarthy for giving me a chance in English football, but I won’t lie – the last year was tough for me.

“I went to him last summer and said I wanted to leave if I wasn’t going to be playing regularly and he said ‘ok, if you want to leave you can leave’. It didn’t happen though.

“Every time I came back into the team last year I thought I played well. I believe in my qualities and that my best football is still to come. I like to play in teams that pass and are progressive and in the end maybe I just didn’t fit at Ipswich any more. That’s football.”

A move to French top-flight club Toulouse fell through at the last moment, with long-time admirers Limassol – who drew 2-2 at Everton in the Europa League group stages last season – quickly swooping.

“I’ve never been to Cyprus before,” said Bru, who became a free agent. “I arrived yesterday and didn’t know what it would be like, but it looks nice and the weather is hot.

“We are going to Australia tomorrow as part of the pre-season preparations and then when I get back from there I will sort a house and my missus and two-year-old son will join me.

“Limassol just missed out on the title last season, so the goal is to win it this time and qualify for the Europa League again.”

He added: “I’ve had a lot of messages from Ipswich fans wishing me well. They were always very supportive of me. I want to thank them a lot for that and I wish the club all the best under the new manager. I will always follow Ipswich’s results and want them to do well in the future.”
