LOWESTOFT Town start their defence of the newly-named John Banks Suffolk Premier Cup tonight.

The holders will be looking for an improved performance - and result - after bowing out of the FA Trophy at the first qualifying round stage following a 1-0 defeat at Lewes on Sunday.

Joint manager Ady Gallagher was moved to tweet after the match: “Sorry to those that travelled to watch us today. Miserable performance. I can only apologise for it and say the buck stops here!”

The Ryman League Premier Division side, who lifted the cup when they beat Bury Town 4-2 in last season’s final at Portman Road, will be firm favourites to beat Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division visitors Brantham Athletic in tonight’s first round tie at Crown Meadow, kick-off 7.45pm.

The majority of the first round ties are scheduled to take place next Tuesday.
