Magpies Ladies IV 1 Beccles 1

AFTER suffering two consecutive league defeats in their opening matches, Magpies were hoping their first home game, against Beccles, would bring a change of fortune.

An early morning push-back in bright, hot sunshine at Weybread saw Magpies start the first half very well, dominating possession with the forward line pressurising the Beccles defence and winning several short corners, but they could not take an early lead.

As the half continued Magpies played some good hockey, improving on recent weeks, passing the ball competently throughout the team, but still could not find the back of the net. In the closing minutes of the half Beccles had some decent possession and Ellie O’Sullivan made some quality saves to keep the score at nil nil going into half time.

Again Magpies started the half well, and were soon rewarded when a quality through-ball from Josie Tibbenham was met by Katie Webb who shot past the ‘keeper to give Magpies a deserved lead.

Magpies looked for a second, and they had chances but didn’t convert, and this proved costly when Beccles equalised from a well-executed short corner routine. Magpies fought for the winner but it was not to be, and the points were shared.

Magpies must not be down-hearted with the result, some good hockey was played, and there are lots of positives to be taken into next week. Special mention must go to Rachael Bains at right back for Magpies, who, on her debut for the fourths, put in a brilliant performance, and was deservedly voted player of the match.
