Ahead of Mick McCarthy’s return to former club Wolves on Saturday, we look at the players who have turned out for both clubs over the years.
Steve Sedgley and Mark Venus
These two free-kick specialists swapped clubs in 1997 and both enjoyed good times at their new homes.
Venus was part of the Ipswich side promoted to the Premier League in 2000 and the subsequent European campaigns, while Sedgley made more than 100 appearances in the west Midlands before retiring. Sedgley has been a youth coach at Luton while Venus is currently at Coventry with old friend Tony Mowbray.
Mark Kennedy
Kennedy perhaps enjoyed the most successful time of his career while at Wolves, as he scored the first goal in his side’s 3-0 play-off final success in 2003, which saw them promoted to the Premier League.
He moved to Ipswich in 2010 under Roy Keane where he eventually finished his career, before going into his current role in charge of the club’s development side.
Jamie Clapham
The bulk of the former Tottenham youngster’s career was spent with Ipswich, making more than 200 appearances over five years, but following relegation in 2002 he headed to Birmingham as the Blues cut costs.
After three years there he headed to Molineux, where he spent two seasons under Mick McCarthy. He’s now retired and has begun his coaching career with Middlesbrough.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake
The former Manchester United trainee was a goalscoring sensation in his early days at Molineux, scoring nearly 40 goals in his first 18 months before injuries began to bite.
Sadly his brief spell at Portman Road in 2013/14 was less fruitful, as he failed to score in 10 games as he continued to recover from injury. He’s now at Chesterfield and has 10 goals to his name so far this season.
Richard Stearman
The popular defender left Wolves at the end of the summer transfer window as he was surprisingly sold to Fulham, having made more than 200 appearances for the old gold in three different divisions.
He impressed while on loan at Portman Road, with his 15 appearances in 2013 enough to convince the Blues faithful he should be signed permanently. Sadly it never happened.
Christophe Berra
A current connection in the Ipswich Town squad, Berra was signed for Wolves by Mick McCarthy, from Hearts, in 2009 for £2.5million and made more than 150 appearances at Molineux.
He left on a free transfer when Wolves were relegated to League One in 2013, eventually signing for Ipswich and making 132 appearances to date.
Jermaine Wright
Before his move to Ipswich from Crewe in 1999, Wright made 25 appearances for Wolves in just over three years before heading to Gresty Road.
While with the Blues, he played more than 200 times and was even mentioned in connection with an England call-up during 2000/01, before moving on to Leeds, Millwall, Southampton and Blackpool before retirement.
Frank Nouble
Ipswich and Wolves are just two of 11 stops on Nouble’s career in England football, with five appearances at Molineux under McCarthy followed by another 60 in Suffolk.
The unconventional forward now plies his trade on China, on loan at Nei Mongoi Zhongyou from Tianjin Quanjian.
Adam Proudlock
After coming through the youth system at Wolves, Proudlock was seen as having great potential as he made 70 appearances before joining Sheffield Wednesday.
After that he played nine times for Ipswich, before his career took him to the likes of Stockport, Darlington, Market Drayton and Whitehawk.
The best of the rest
Stephen Hunt played under McCarthy at both Ipswich and Wolves, while Keith Andrews, Marcus Bent, Marlon Harewood, Ivar Ingimarsson, Tony Dinning and Andy Marshall have also spent time at both clubs.
Jordan Graham is currently at Wolves, have had a brief spell on loan at Portman Road from Aston Villa in 2013.
