Colchester Harriers scooped medals galore at the recent Essex County Track & Field Championships, held at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford.

Philippa Davenall led the way, continuing her incredible run of form in the under-17 women’s throwing events by winning gold in the shot putt, thanks to a personal best of 9.94 metres.

Davenall also won a silver medal in the discus with 28.60m, which was another impressive PB, having earlier in the competition again broken the Harriers’ club record for the hammer with 50.35 for second spot.

There was also a gold medal on the track for international race-walker, Daniel King, who produced a vintage performance in the 3,000m walk to win in a time of 13mins 3.47secs.

Club-mate Jordan Rowe was another to dominate, in his under-20 men’s 1,500m race, leading from the front to win gold in a PB of 3:59.68.

Gold was also the colour for Jake Young, who ran his best race of the season in the under-15 boys’ 800m final, tasting victory in a stunning time of 2:04.74.

Michael Everitt also continued his great form with a bronze in the shot (PB of 11.31m), while Tom Mitchell claimed a bronze medal in the javelin with 42.71m, and Millie Belbin took silver with a best of 9.25m in the triple jump. She also leapt out to 4.28m in the long jump.

In the under-20 men’s category, James Hamblin launched the hammer out to 61.94m for a silver medal, and Kelly Sutton ran her fastest ever 200m to clinch a silver medal with a massive PB of 24.87.

There was also silver medals for under-20 athlete Ben Argent in the 200m (22.58) and Connor Oliver in the under-17 men’s 200m (PB of 22.92).

In the under-13 section, Kira Wealls overcame her nerves to gain a well-deserved bronze medal in the 200m with a time of 28.97.

Other highlights included a sixth spot for Paul Spowage in the senior men’s 1,500m (4:39.39), and sixth for James Grant in the 200m (23.7) despite a strong head wind.

Senior woman Nicola Martell-Smith was just edged out of the medals in the 400m hurdles (fourth in 1:06.54), as was under-20 athlete Chloe Young in her 200m (fourth). Callum Pettit-Coombes set a PB of 23.98 in the under-17 men’s 200m.

Elsewhere, there were fifth places for Katherine Jane Watts (2:28.59 in the u-17 women’s 800m) and Isabel Sawyer (28.92 in the 200m), while Charlie Dobson narrowly missed out on a medal with a PB of 24.78 for fourth in his 200m race.

The Harriers had also won medals on the first day of the competition, spearheaded by a silver for Kelly Sutton in the 100m (12.61). James Grant was sixth in his senior men’s final with 11.71.

Callum Pettit-Coombes ran 12.17 for second in his heat of the 100m (u-17s), and managed 12.18 in the final, while Connor Oliver followed up a win in his heat of the 400m (51.71) with fourth spot in the final (51.83).

Courtney Bland celebrated a PB of 9.73m in the triple jump for a bronze medal, and Jake Young clinched silver in his 300m due to a massive PB of 37.9, which broke his own club record.

Charlie Dobson notched a PB in his heat of the 300m (39.66), before finishing fourth in the final. James Hoddell ran a PB of 42.36 in his 400m heat.

Over 100 metres, Kira Wealls was fourth in the final, with club-mate Megan Stevens also progressing through the rounds for seventh in the final.

Savannah Harrison won her heat of the 800m in a PB of 2:44.82, Rachel Hoddell was fourth over the 80m hurdles in 14.50, and Caitlin O’Reilly took third in her 100m (12.91).

In the under-13 boys’ section, Finn O’Reilly took second in the javelin with 35.15m and was eighth in the long jump with 4.20m.
