The Blues are 12th in the table and out of the FA Cup after winning just one of their last eight matches, while Sunderland – relegated from the Premier League last season – are one point and one place above rock-bottom Burton.
Town signed winger Mustapha Carayol (Nottingham Forest, free) and young Irish right-back Barry Cotter (Limerick, £70k) on transfer deadline day, while striker David McGoldrick stayed following late interest from Bolton.
Sunderland signed striker Ashley Fletcher (Middlesbrough, loan), goalkeeper Lee Camp (Cardiff, loan) and midfielder Ovie Ejaria (Liverpool, loan).
