New Ipswich Town boss Paul Hurst says he’ll set up his team to play with energy and intensity.

Part of owner Marcus Evans’ five-point plan is for the Blues to play ‘attractive and exciting football’, with the hope that attendances at Portman Road can climb once again after recently reaching near 20-year lows.

“I won’t be reinventing the game,” said Hurst, whose low-budget Shrewsbury Town side defied the odds to finish third in League One before losing in the Play-Off Final to Rotherham recently.

“The requirements of hard work and commitment will be there. I will be looking for the players to give their all – that should be a minimum requirement in any team but it doesn’t always work out like that.

“From that base, I want us to play on the front foot though. I want to have energy and intensity in our performance and, above all, I will be encouraging the players to go out and play and enjoy their job.

“I have always tried to do that wherever I have been as a manager. To get players to enjoy the way they play on a football pitch.”

That proclamation comes on the day that Evans has announced there will be a more universal playing style across all age groups going forwards.

Hurst and his assistant Chris Doig will be expected to work closely with the academy, while key academy staff Bryan Klug, Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg – who all ended the season in caretaker charge – will continue to work closely with the first team.

“A key responsibility of Paul’s will be to oversee our evolving strategy to develop a playing style, as well as a fitness and mental attitude ethos, throughout all aspects of the club,” said Evans.

“And to work with Bryan Klug and the club’s coaches who will translate these goals as appropriate through all age groups.

“To further assist the transition of players from one squad to the next there will be greater involvement of coaches across the board, so our Under-23 coaches will be part of the first-team set-up, while Paul and Chris will have an active role within the U23s and U18s where possible.” Meanwhile, the club have also announced that they will be leaving no stone unturned in terms of statistical analysis and sports science this season.
