In our daily feature, we take a look at what happened on this day in Ipswich Town’s history – and today includes a UEFA Cup win and a strike from fan favourite Micky Stockwell.
We begin today in 1999 when Micky Stockwell was among the scorers as Town beat league leaders Charlton 4-2 at Portman Road, while 50 years ago the Blues beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 at Meadow Lane.
In 2004, the Blues drew 2-2 with Leicester City at the Walkers Stadium with the Foxes’ Matt Heath turning from hero to villain as his late own goal earned Ipswich a point, while Paul Mason scored for Town as they drew 1-1 with Portsmouth at Portman Road.
And finally on this day in 1977, the Blues beat Spanish side Las Palmas 1-0 at Portman Road in the first leg of the UEFA Cup second round, with Eric Gates scoring the only goal of the game.
