Ipswich Town legend Russell Osman has taken to Twitter to warn Blues’ boss Paul Hurst about the dangers of criticising his players in the wake of their Carabao Cup humbling at Exeter.

Town exited the league cup at the first hurdle again last night, falling to their League Two opponents on penalties despite fielding a stromg side.

And in a fiery interview after the game, Hurst pulled no punches, laying into his players and suggesting that some of them weren’t giving 100%.

The new Blues’ boss, who has yet to enjoy his first win in a competitive match, said: “I was disappointed with the performance in both halves. “We can pretend we passed it at times and I think we had a couple more efforts second half than we did in the first but it was too slow, too pedestrian and people not really playing the way they were supposed to and not making it as fluid as it needed to be.

“I didn’t think we worked hard enough in possession or out of possession. The players will be shown Exeter players running past ours far too easily and I’m not having that they are faster, fitter or stronger. They will be shown things I don’t want to see again.

“There need to be a few home truths. I’ve said what I am and I’m honest, I say what I think and what I say. And that’s what I saw.”

Hurst’s comments split Town fans, with many saying they were exactly what’s needed, and others feeling the new manager had gone too far - including Osman.

He tweeted: “Got to careful in blaming everybody and everything else since joining the club... if it was all that bad before why did you take the job on??”

He added: “I think sometimes actions speak louder than words...I hope the Club has a great season and goes from strength to strength in all areas.. which I hope is a positive comment..”
