PORTSMOUTH boss Tony Adams has scrapped a move for Real Madrid and Argentina star Javier Saviola because of fears he will not be good enough for the struggling Premier League outfit.

Adams is thought to have been keen on bringing the 27-year-old striker to Fratton Park but now fears he is simply not fit enough.

Saviola - who has 44 caps for Argentina - spent six years at Barcelona where he scored 49 goals in 129 appearances. However, his time at the Bernabu has been no where near as happy as his time at the Nou Camp since his switch in 2007.

Saviola started the season as fourth choice striker behind Rudd Van Nistelrooy, Raul and Gonzalo Higuan, while the recent arrival of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw him drop even further down the pecking order.

Pompey are now believed to be switching their attentions towards bringing Manchester City striker Benjani back to Fratton Park.

Adams will offer City 3million to re-sign Benjani, a year after the Zimbabwean moved in the opposite direction for 3.8m.
