The 21-year-old eventually came through the ranks at Middlesbrough having postponed his football career in order to further his education. He gained five 'A' grades in his first year A-Level studies.
After making 69 appearances in three years on Teeside, Cattermole signed for Wigan for �3.5m in 2008.
He has made 12 appearances for the England Under-21s.
