Football: Suffolk referee and Suffolk FA Referees' Development Officer Simon Long has been promoted to the Premier League Assistant Referees' list.

The promotion will now mean Simon, who was an assistant referee on Football League matches last season, could now be officiating at grounds such as Old Trafford, Anfield and Stamford Bridge. Simon will continue to referee games at Blue Square Premier level as he has done for the past season.

Simon is understandably delighted with the news: “When I started refereeing, I never believed that this would be possible, it really is a dream come true. I'm both excited and privileged to be a part of one of the greatest leagues in the world”.

Suffolk FA's Chief Executive Martin Head commented: “I was delighted when I heard of Simon's promotion; it is extremely positive for Simon and indeed refereeing in Suffolk generally. The pathway is there for referees to reach this level of football and Simon's success only goes to demonstrate this fact to our referees in this county”.
