Colchester United grabbed a tremendous 2-0 victory at League One leaders, Charlton Athletic, at the Valley.

A stunning fifth-minute strike from Anthony Wordsworth and a fortuitous second half effort from Steven Gillespie saw the U’s inflict on Charlton their first home defeat of the season and send the travelling fans from Essex into raptures.

In between the two goals, the visitors defended manfully as the Addicks mounted numerous attacks, but the woodwork denied former United ace Johnnie Jackson, while Ben Williams denied Bradley Wright-Phillips with a superb one-handed stop.

But it was far from one-way traffic and United looked to counter whenever they could, using the hold-up play of the outstanding Kayode Odejayi to good effect as they recorded their first win at the Valley since April 2008.
