South Suffolk Leisure in conjunction with Babergh District Council are inviting customers to make 2009 the year they make a splash for all the right reasons by launching a fantastic free swimming programme for the under 17's and over 60's as part of the government's 140 million initiative to improve the health of the Nation by the 2012 London Olympics.

Tracey Copping, Chief Executive explains the thinking behind the programme: 'Swimming is a fun way to keep healthy - whatever your age, fitness or mobility level. Free sessions represent a great opportunity for customers to take the plunge, get moving and improve their longer term health. From 1st April 2009, under 17's and over 60's will benefit from a free pass allowing them to enjoy unlimited swimming at our pool'.

The scheme is intended to help improve the Nation's health and tackle the growing obesity epidemic. Estimations suggest that over 20 million people could benefit from free exercise, with swimming being identified as a sport with universal appeal at both ends of the age spectrum. Tracey Copping continues: 'It's ideal for younger and older customers keen to meet recommended exercise guidelines'.

Swimming teaches children vital life saving skills, and can really improve both confidence and fitness while helping reduce the likelihood of obesity. As a low impact sport, it's one of the easiest ways to get fit, particularly for those who haven't exercised for some time. It's therefore an ideal choice for the over 60's; helping to improve flexibility, mobility and stamina levels while offering a full body workout. Research has also indicated the sport may help to counteract the effects of stress.

Getting involved couldn't be easier; eligible customers can drop into Kingfisher Leisure Centre or Hadleigh Swimming Pool from 1st April and complete a simple registration form to qualify for their free swimming pass which can then be used straight away.

The last word goes to Mick Packer, General Manager, who comments: 'Whether you want to brush up your breaststroke, focus on front crawl or get motivated with your mates; now's the time to make a splash and take the first steps towards a healthier and fitter lifestyle! With our free swimming sessions, customers could soon find themselves toning up and tightening their belts without tightening their wallets!'
