Saturday’s FA Cup clash at Portman Road will be the third time Ipswich and Portsmouth have met at this stage of the competition in a little over 10 years.

A lot has changed in the eight years since the two teams last met in the FA Cup, especially on the south coast.

When they came to Portman Road in 2008, Pompey were on a crest of a wave which would soon result in them winning the world’s most prestigious cup competition, but are now languishing in League Two after financial issues saw them rapidly drop from English football’s elite.

The two teams do battle this Saturday with a fourth round spot at stake, so we’ve taken a look back at the last two cup meetings between the two.

Ipswich Town 0 Portsmouth 1 - Saturday, January 5 2008

The Blues, led by manager Jim Magilton, ran into the eventual winners at the third-round stage and came off second-best in a tight game despite pushing the Premier League side all the way following Liam Trotter’s early red card.

While they now find themselves in League Two, Pompey included the likes of Premier League winner, Kanu, England internationals David James, Glen Johnson and Sol Campbell and ex-Blue Hermann Hreidarsson in their side that day, with a seemingly eternal nemesis scoring the winner. Of course, David Nugent came on at the break and, as he always had and has continued to do against the Blues, found the net in the second half to take the Premier League side through.

The Blues went into the game heavily depleted, with strikers Nicky Forster, Sam Parkin, Dean Bowditch, Alan Lee and Billy Clarke all sidelined, leaving Danny Haynes to lead the line ahead of a five-man Ipswich midfield. Sadly, he couldn’t find a way through a solid Pompey defence, with Uruguayan international Dario Silva firing home the game’s only goal after 37 minutes.
