COLCHESTER United manager John Ward says the club’s supporters have a big role to play when Southampton visit tomorrow.
A U’s team packed with free transfers, non-league signings and loanees would cut the gap between them and the big-budgeted Saints to a point – as well as the top six – should they record a fifth successive home victory.
Southampton fans look set to pack out the entire North Stand at The Weston Homes Community Stadium and will be vociferous in their support, despite a surprise defeat at relegation-threatened Walsall on Tuesday night,
Colchester’s own ticket sales for the game are going well though following a midweek 1-0 win at Bristol Rovers. The car park is already sold out, while a call for fans to wear blue and white should ensure a party atmosphere.
“We’re playing a team who I consider to be the best in our division,” said Ward. “I don’t think that’s a frightener for us though, that’s an incentive for our players and supporters to stand up and be counted.
“Their fans will create an atmosphere which I hope our supporters can retaliate to.
“They are the favourites, but the smaller club like Colchester can beat Southampton on any given day over a 90 minute match.
“The opportunity to go within three points of them at this stage of the season is immense.
“It’s a big day and a big game and I’m really looking forward to it.”
