Although both sides were already promoted and had one eye on forthcoming cup finals, the two local rivals served up a fine game in their last league match of the season, writes Dave Meeson.
The visitors left out top scorers Mark Ray, who was on the bench, and Matt Mackenzie while Whitton’s influential Duane Wright only made a brief appearance as sub late in the game.
Whitton were the better side for the first hour, though league champions Woodbridge improved greatly after the break and looked increasingly threatening on the counter-attack. That said the hosts had a golden chance take all three points near the end only for Kevin Inglis to fail from the spot.
After a quiet opening, Whitton began to get on top and opened the scoring on 12 minutes when their top scorer Jamie Cole collected a through pass and deftly finished with an angled lob for his 36th goal of the season. United continued to press and Lloyd Clarke, who was finding a lot of space in his left wing-back role, set up George Mrozek whose effort was deflected narrowly wide.
Woodbridge eventually created something but Kelsey Trotter guided his header the wrong side of the woodwork.
Back came Whitton and the dangerous Cole then crossed to Inglis who volleyed wide at the back post.
Woodbridge were level a minute after the restart as Callum Sinclair burst through the middle before finding Trotter who netted with a low drive across the keeper and into the corner.
Whitton replied with efforts from Josh Hitter and Josh Hubert before Peckers keeper Alfie Stronge pulled off a brilliant save to keep out a 25-yard free kick from Tom Bradlaugh.
Sinclair then drove at the home defence again but this time Trotter was only able to blaze over.
Soon afterwards Trotter crossed to the back post when Ryan Keeble poked the ball wide under pressure from the home defence.
Then with two minutes of normal time remaining Josh Stevens was brought down in the box only for visiting keeper Stronge to easily save the tame spot kick from Inglis.
Right at the death Sinclair worked a chance for himself though he could only find the side-netting and the points were shared.
