Ipswich Town slipped to a 1-0 defeat away at Wolves this afternoon. Sports writer Andy Warren hands out his player grades.
Bartosz Bialkowski
Had little chance for the goal as the ball was fired through traffic into the back of the net but, otherwise, was not called into serious action despite the hosts having a total of 17 shots. 6
Jordan Spence
Solid enough down the right side of the Town defence as Wolves switched wingers throughout the contest. Didn’t get forward as often as he did in the clash with Reading last weekend. 7
Luke Chambers
The skipper threw himself into a number of tackles and won his fair share of balls in the air. While the Town defence was regularly stretched, neither Chambers nor Adam Webster were ever completely overrun by the opposition. 7
Adam Webster
Defended well for much of the game as Wolves looked to pass the ball quickly and incisively through the Town backline. Stepped out of defence a couple of times himself and took up a midfield position and had a threatening header late in the game. 7
Myles Kenlock
Jota’s firm challenge on the Town full-back, in which the youngster lost possession, led to the Wolves opener and went unpunished despite appeals for a foul. But Kenlock performed well after being called upon to replace the ill Jonas Knudsen and was not over-awed by the hosts’ galaxy of big money signings. 7
Callum Connolly
One of the Everton loanee’s more quiet game since moving up into the middle of midfield. But he still had the bite in the challenge which has made him such an important part of this Ipswich side. 6
Kevin Bru
The Mauritius international was called upon to replace Cole Skuse in the middle of the Blues midfield but, in truth, the visitors missed the influence of their near ever-present interceptor. Bru battled away, but lacked the bite or drive of the former Bristol City man. 6
Grant Ward
Perhaps the Blues’ best player at Molineux, who proved to be the starting point for a number of attacks in the first half. He hassled and harried up-and-down the right flank throughout, supported Jordan Spence well and contributed in all three thirds of the pitch. 7 – STAR MAN
Martyn Waghorn
His usual high-quality set pieces were found wanting this afternoon but there was no lack of effort from the Blues’ leading scorer, who hassled as much as anyone. Saw more of the ball in the second period but couldn’t force Ruddy into serious action before being replaced by McGoldrick. 7
Bersant Celina
Saw very little of the ball in the first period but was more involved in the second – creating a chance which Waghorn could only stab wide. Has certainly had better games, though. 6
Joe Garner
Having successfully battled with big defenders throughout the season, undersized target man Garner may have finally met his match in the Wolves defence. Willy Boly in particular dominated the Town man in the air which nullified perhaps the best attribute of his game. 6
Teddy Bishop (for Bru, 66)
Was given 25 minutes to make an impact but never really managed to exert himself on the contest. 6
David McGoldrick (for Waghorn, 72)
It was good to see the striker back on the field following his recent injury lay-off, but he couldn’t provide the spark Ipswich needed. 6
Freddie Sears (for Garner, 78)
Needs more game time than this if he is to rediscover his goal-scoring form. 6
