I was lucky enough to be among those invited to a special preview of this play, an innovative adaptation of Grimm’s classic tales Gambling Hans and Godfather Death, before it headed to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The first sees a down on his luck gambler upset Earth, hell and heaven when he abuses the Lord and St Peter’s chance of redemption. The second sees Father Time’s godson trick his deadly benefactor one too many times.
It was a confident, multi-layered performance from the 11-strong cast of Woodbridge School pupils. Fusing live performance, music, song and puppetry, it was very imaginative.
A well crafted piece with inventive use of the simple staging and clever choreography, the performances were equally impressive; especially the puppet work. It was a bold choice of play, one that deserves to be shared with a larger audience upon its return from the festival.
