Two of the region’s top performers are facing off in a bar room battle royale as Ipswich-based Antigen Records returns to St Jude’s Tavern.
Mick Squalor and Jack Rundell are better known for being part of the usually noisy bands Dingus Khan, from Essex, and The Waxing Captors, from Ipswich, will go head to head at tomorrow’s gig.
Squalor’s set will showcase some of the more subtle pop prowess behind Dingus Khan’s gloriously chaotic debut album Support Mistley Swans, which garnered critical acclaim following attention from the BBC’s Steve Lamacq and festival dates at Latitude and Reading and Leeds.
“I’m thrilled to be playing the small and very cosy setting at St Jude’s,” says Dingus Khan frontman Squalor. “We’ve been very busy on our recent UK tour but this is set to be a very different experience. I’m hoping to still put a lot of emphasis on a dramatic live show but I’m looking forward to playing acoustically to give a different take on things.”
Rundell’s solo show has been evolving in tandem with his usual role as guitarist in party-punk five-piece The Waxing Captors and recalls the Nashville country sound with a healthy tongue-in-cheek humour that has led to memorable lo-fi numbers such as I Tear My Hair Out When You Walk By.
Antigen Records is set to release a long overdue retrospective along with new material and Rundell himself is uploading new songs to www.jackrundell.co.uk every week in the run up to the gig at St Jude’s.
“This is our third show at this great little venue and we’re very pleased we’re able to put such events on for music fans so close to the town centre. The private function room upstairs provides a perfect atmosphere and each night has been truly memorable,” adds Antigen Records spokesperson Jason Whittaker.
“We’re also looking to have some other local artists as special surprise guests on the bill so it promises to be an evening full of interesting and varied music.”
