It’s a whole new beginning for 52-year old Mick Hucknall, going it alone after many successful years with Simply Red.
But some things can never change – those trademark red curls, for one.
The show, in conjunction with his latest album, was filled with songs that inspired him on his journey through life, plenty of guitar solos and a few surprises thrown in for good measure.
To start the evening off, support came in the form of singer-songwriter Moya, 21, who with more than a million YouTube hits to her name, has been tipped as the next big thing. Her fresh sound filled the theatre, preparing the audience for what was to come.
As Mick joined the stage, we were taken on a trip down memory lane with cover after recognisable cover, but he still managed to put his own mark on each song. With classics including Etta James’ I’d Rather Go Blind and That’s How Strong My Love Is by Otis Redding, he showed some heart and soul, ballards and blues.
The audience warmly welcomed the well-known If You Don’t Know Me By Now and Money’s Too Tight (To Mention) – along with a few other well-known Simply Red numbers. Well, they couldn’t possibly be left out, could they?
It must be quite a challenge to follow up the history this man has – but a great collection, great performance, and after many years, he certainly still has it in him.
