Open-air music at the Prom on the Prom in Felixstowe is just one of this weekend’s varied entertainment highlights, along with a range of shows and events.
The Roy Orbison & Traveling Wilburys Experience, Spa Pavilion, Felixstowe, August 10
It’s now 30 years since the original album release by legendary supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. This musical tribute show remembers all the band members, with a special tribute to The Big O, Roy Orbison, who died the same year. With big-screen film and expert narration, as well as five tribute artists, the show also includes classics by George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. Prom on the Prom, Seafront Gardens, Felixstowe, August 11
Get set for a day of live music in the Seafront Gardens to mark Music in Felixstowe’s 10th year. The event will start with the Clarinet and String Trio at 2pm, performing light and popular classics. You can try different instruments yourself at a workshop afterwards. The string quartet Quartetto Familia, Seckford Brass, Felixstowe Community Choir and jazz singer Verity Poulson will all take part, and there will also be European folk music from Stringfillies and Wade Ablitt and Co presenting songs from a new musical. Then at 7.30pm, the Festival Orchestra will present an evening prom featuring film music, conducted by Jeremy Hughes. Admission is free. For full details, see the Felixstowe Music website.
Theatre in the Forest, Jimmy’s Farm, Wherstead, until August 26
Open-air Shakespeare has returned. This year Red Rose Chain is performing romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing, with sparring couple Benedick and Beatrice taking part in battles of wit. Set in the 1940s with fighter pilots and jitterbugging, this production features many familiar faces, and there is a strong musical element too. Performances are at 7.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday, with matinees at 2pm on Saturday and an extra show at 7.30pm on Sunday, August 26. For more details and to book, see the Red Rose Chain website.
Suffolk Soul Singers and Chaps Men’s Choir, Museum Street Methodist Church, August 11
Two popular choirs are joining forces for an unusual concert at Museum Street Methodist Church. Suffolk Soul Singers will present a collection of soul songs, upbeat gospel and contemporary hits, given a soulful twist. Chaps Choir, their guests from London, will perform an unusual blend of songs, which they describe as including pop song rehashes, snowy hunting calls, Manhattanite observations and self-aware pirates! Summer Fete, Hazeldell Residential Home, Elton Park, Ipswich, August 11
There’s a Wild West theme to this summer fete, but fancy dress is optional. Take your family along and help to raise money for the residents’ amenity fund. Special guests are Gemma’s Farm, who will have a petting area, and there will also be music, games, a cake stall, a barbecue and a raffle. The fete runs from 2.30 to 5.30pm.
Mr Bean Magic Workshop, Gainsborough Community Library, August 11
Any budding magicians in your household? If so, now’s their chance to learn some magic tricks at this fun workshop, which runs from 1 to 2pm. Under-eights will need to be accompanied by an adult. Youngsters attending the workshop may also be able to take part in Mr Bean’s Magic Cabaret Show, which will be staged at the library in September. The Taste for Travel Holiday Show, Jimmy’s Farm, Wherstead, August 12
Looking to get away from it all? A wide range of travel and cruise companies will be taking part in this travel show on Sunday, hosted by Fred. Olsen travel agents and TravelQuest, offering a taste of holidays around the world. There will be a steel band, outdoor games including Jenga and Connect4, and children’s activities including science and arts and crafts, as well as face painting. The show runs from 11am to 3pm.
