MIKE Leigh’s touching drama Another Year is Richard Bryson’s DVD pick this week.

Film: Another Year (Moment, 13.99)

Director Mike Leigh is adept at capturing human emotions, his films gently focusing on people suffering, or simply trying to get by in life.

Another Year is 12 months in the life of an engineer (Jim Broadbent) and his counsellor wife, played by Ruth Sheen.

If they represent grounded normality it’s their friends and acquaintances who add spice to the mix.

The drama (with a plaintive score lapping around its edges) moves slowly from kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms to garden parties and watch out for actors of the calibre of Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton and Philip Davies.

Few of these characters are happy but the wonderful detail of expressions and snatched conversations make this another little gem from Leigh and the sort of film to be enjoyed by those of us in our mature years.
