Nicola Warren reviews new psychological thriller Sharp Objects, which is on Mondays at 9pm

“You know I’m going to get this story one way or another. Wouldn’t you rather be in control of the conversation?”

Camille Preaker is hunting for a story in her dead end home town of Wind Gap, a town which is hunting for a missing girl.

At first, Camille, played by Amy Adams, is nonchalant about covering the story when it’s pitched to her by her rasping editor.

But she’s soon pressing the police, and the father of a girl murdered the previous year, for information.

However, Camille is an outsider – once a Wind Gap native, she’s now seen as a big city reporter. Even her mum is reluctant to let her back into her childhood home.

Also, the writer is dealing with at least one traumatic event from her past, which we see in a flashback. Movie fans may recognise the young Camille as Sophia Lillis – one of the young members of the cast of last year’s adaptation of It.

Back to the present day, and Camille is dealing with her past by self-medicating with copious amounts of alcohol – the shop owner checks his watch to see that it’s 8.20am when she’s stocking up on vodka.

Her return to her home town is a bit like stepping into a timewarp – teens are still getting round the town on rollerskates, just like when Camille was younger, and her mum floats around her childhood home in a 1970s style gown.

Her mum seems fragile, perhaps dealing with the trauma from Camille’s childhood and the recent cases her daughter is looking in to.

She doesn’t want to know about anything Camille finds out about the cases.

So it’s lucky Camille doesn’t have anything to report, even after visiting big city detective Richard Willis who it seems she may have an affinity with.

But in the town square, shrieks are heard and suddenly, in a passageway window, there is Camille’s story.

Is it a coincidence that it happens when Camille has returned to Wind Gap or could she be a suspect too? I have a feeling this series will keep us all guessing right until the final episode.
