Plans to extend the "prosperity and longevity" of a town pub by opening new accommodation have been given the go-ahead.

In December, Ben Elvin Planning Consultancy submitted plans on behalf of The Cock Inn, Hadleigh, to convert 91 George Street into accommodation to support the establishment.

Supporting documents lodged with Babergh District Council said the premises, adjacent to the pub, would be used as a guest house or for staff depending on business circumstances.

A planning statement said: "The proposal seeks to support the prosperity and longevity of The Cock Inn

"Whilst the pub is situated in an urban setting, it is effectively one of a number of public houses in this modest town.

"Like many other situations such as this, there are continuing economic pressures on any such establishment where competition exists, and the need to diversify and offer alternatives to the traditional public house business model is clear."

It added the applicant is seeking to make the changes in order to secure the future viability of the pub.
