On-loan Ipswich Town winger Jeremy Sarmiento bagged an assist on his return to the Ecuador national team as they beat Guatemala 2-0 at Red Bull Arena in New York.

The 21-year-old, who's spending the season at Portman Road from Premier League side Brighton, hadn't played for La Tri since March 2023, having missed out on a place in the squad from March to November last year.

His move to Suffolk has helped him gain additional game time, and manager Felix Sanchez Bas has taken notice, starting him on the left wing for their friendly match against Guatemala.

Sarmiento set up the opening goal, pinging a cross-field ball to John Yeboah, who opened the scoring in the eighth minute.

He was then withdrawn with 73 minutes on the clock, before Gonzalo Plata wrapped up the win with three minutes to go.

Speaking after the game, Sarmiento said:  "I went through a difficult time of not being in the national team for a year, but I'm very happy to come back and fight to be at the Copa America."

"I'm very happy to be able to help the team. It feels very good to be here and to be back with the boys."

Ecuador will be in action once again on Sunday evening as they face reigning European champions Italy in New York.

Elsewhere, Cameron Burgess helped Australia keep a clean sheet against Lebanon in World Cup qualifying while Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead came off the bench for Wales as they beat Finland in their EURO 2024 play-off match.
